When Katrina ripped through the gulf coast, leaving so many people homeless and in need, the White Oak Foundation, Inc. made the quick decision to do
something specific and concrete to help. On Sept. 8, 2005, 12 members and friends boarded a bus to Gulfport, Mississippi and headed to the area to assist.
The bus was loaded with medicine, water, food and clothing. However, the bus returned to Apex, NC. loaded with evacuees. The White Oak Foundation decided
to provide a level of support and service that would provide complete relocation assistance and support until those families could become independent and self
supporting.
Our Foundation has provided help to over 80 people and continues to offer day to day support for 27 families from Gulfport, New Orleans and other devastated
areas of the gulf coast.
The initial outpouring of financial assistance was tremendous, we organized partnerships with the religious community, businesses, private citizens, volunteers
and our legislative and municipal bodies. Those partnerships enabled us to provide a full array of services: housing assistance, childcare, transportation,
and more.
As time marches forward the financial contributions have slowed down, the local government funding for assistance is terminating and the assistance from FEMA
in very uncertain. Nevertheless, the needs of the families still exist at a significant level. We are rapidly depleting our resources and we need your assistance.
We need financial assistance to continue to meet their needs in the following areas:
- Housing
- Child Care
- Transportation
- Health Insurance
- Education for the youth
- Education for the adults
- Counseling Services
- Clothing Assistance
